sugar water for kittens
Recent articles If you have been up to date with our Orphaned Kitten Blog Series you now know the basics of what to do if you find orphan kittens. You can read and . Kittens under 8 weeks are extremely fragile. Your body temperatures need to stay warmer than you can think and fall very quickly. They are tiny and extremely susceptible to a multitude of diseases and diseases, and they can get sick very quickly if they are not eating enough and/or often enough. When a kitten becomes fragile, lethargic, or sick, this is called "prevariate kitten syndrome" and is extremely life threatening. Kittens can go from great to terrible in a matter of minutes, without warning, and sometimes without reason. It is important to recognize the symptoms and to know the steps to take if and when faced with a kitten that fades. Knowing the signs: The two main causes of FKS are hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and hypothermia (too cold body temperature) so these are the two areas where we focus on dealing with a fragile kite. Step One: Get Kitty's warming again! Even though you have provided your kitten with a heat source, you must now apply additional heat for this kitten – remember never to apply a heat source directly to the body of the kitten as this can cause severe burn and even overheating (do not kittens get complicated?). The best thing you can do in this situation is called "Burrito Roll". Take a heating pad, place a blanket or towel on the pad, place the kitten on top of that (with your head near the edge) and wrap the kitten in your double layer "burrito" so it is completely rolled into the heating pad and blanket. You want to make sure that it is not too tight for the kitten to breathe, and that the kitten face is easily accessible for your next step. If you don't have a heating pad, you can do two things. Keep your dryer running constantly with towels and replace the outer towel with a hot dryer towel every 5 minutes (be sure to keep a blanket or towel between your hot towel and kitten) Or you can fill two large socks with uncooked rice (leave the ends so that the rice is not spilled), and heat them in the microwave for 3 minutes. Place a sock full of rice on each side of the kitten with a blanket or towel wrapped around the kitten yet) and reheat a sock at once every 30 minutes. It is important that you reheat one at a time so that the remaining heat of a sock keeps the cooling kite completely in that 3-minute interval. It seems short, but it's enough time to undo all the progress you've already made. Step Two: Get Kitty's Blood Sugar Retroceder A cold kitten should not be given food or started on this second step. Once your body is no longer cold to the touch, your ears have warmed, or your feet pads are no longer cold, you can start step two. Fill a bowl or plate of Tupperware with sugar water or a syrup (such as maple or agave syrup – you may need to add some water to make it a little louder). It is important that this mixture remains very sugary and thick, but it drains enough to distribute it to the kitten. You can manage this sugary mixture in two ways – by rubbing it directly into your gums with your finger, or by dropping 3 drops in your mouths with a syringe. If the kitten is not responsible or does not swallow the mixture, you do not want to try to force it in your throat as this can make them suck, or drown. Instead, concentrate on getting the syrup directly into your gums and tongue/roof from your mouth. The aim is to apply the syrup to your mouths no more than every 3 minutes. Set a timer to help you track. If you spend more than 3 minutes, you can also not manage sugar. If the kitten is extremely lethargic, shoot for every minute and a half to three minutes. Once again, never wait more than 3 minutes to apply the syrup again. Prognosis Generally, it is not recommended to rush the kitten to the veterinarian, as tempting as it seems, for many reasons. The kitten will continue to lower body temperature and sugar in the blood, while leading them to your veterinarian. It is more important to raise both your body temperature and your blood sugar level, instead of taking them to a veterinarian, who will only follow the same steps above (if the kitten does so far). In addition, even a vet emergency clinic works at first, first serves the base, which means that you can sit and wait, when instead you could be home making this kitten your top priority. The sooner you can manage these two steps and focus all your attention on the kitten, the better chance the kitten has a successful recovery. There's no time for a kitten to recover from FKS. Sometimes you're lucky, and the kitten recovers with 30-60 minutes. Other times, a kitten is needed a few hours to recover completely and be able to withstand, move and eat again. (We should point out how important it is that you never try to feed a kitten suffering from FKS. You should always wait until the kitten has made a complete recovery before offering formula or food. As sad as it is, some kittens don't recover from FKS. Cats usually have such large liters because kittens are so fragile and can happen so easily. Sometimes the best thing you can do for a kitten that fades, is to keep it warm and comfortable until it finally happens. It's heartbreaking and extremely sad, but please don't give up for the amazing job you're doing! Sometimes kittens vanish without their fault, or they have a disease that is unknown. There are many support groups on social networks and through animal rescues where you can find stories and help if you are having difficulties accepting and moving forward from the pain of losing a kitten, and we encourage you to do some research and find these groups to help you cope with the loss. Remember that without you, this kitten (and your littermatoes) would probably never have had the opportunity to survive, and not only has you given them that, you have shown them love and made your time comfortable. Thanks for taking on the demanding kitten care job; it is exhausting and difficult, but it is so rewarding. You have done and are doing an amazing and wonderful thing!
